September 28 -October 21State Fair of TexasFair Park The State Fair of Texas runs for 24 days. With more than 70 rides-- including the 212 foot Texas Star Ferris Wheel, and a parade through the park every night!
A 277-acre entertainment and recreation complex owned by the City of Dallas, is located two miles east of downtown. The park is the year-round home of the Music Hall, Cotton Bowl and eight museums. Fair Park is a National Historic Landmark and boasts the largest collection of art deco exposition buildings in the United States. Hours: During the 24-day State Fair of Texas, the exhibit buildings are open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fair's economic impact on Dallas: approx. $350 million annually. Exhibit space: approx. 370,000 sq. ft. in six buildings. Amusement rides: 70-75. 212-ft. Texas Star is the tallest Ferris wheel in North America. Livestock entries: approximately 8,000. Creative Arts entries: approximately 7,000. Food service locations: approximately 200. Ride & food revenues: $26 million (2006). The Texas-OU football game has been played during the Fair every year since 1929. Big Tex made his first State Fair appearance in 1952. Corny dogs were invented in 1942 by State Fair concessionaires Carl and Neil Fletcher. Since 1992, the State Fair of Texas Scholarship program has awarded more than $1.8 million in new and renewed college grants to eligible students.
HISTORY: The first State Fair to be held in Dallas was presented at this location in 1886. Fair Park was the site of the 1936 Texas Centennial Exposition which ran for six months and attracted 6 million people. An extended 31-day Fair in 1986 celebrated the Texas Sesquicentennial and drew almost 4 million visitors.

'The Lion King' roars into Fair Park Music Hall

Usually parents have to choose between musicals for themselves and those for the kids. But Disney's The Lion King is that special family show that enchants both. The four-day event, which starts Sept. 13, covers a spectrum of options: wine-and-food pairing demos; cooking demonstrations at the Culinary Pavilion; wine education; presentations by notables such as chef Brian Olenjack of Olenjack's Grille and Paula Lambert of Mozzarella Company as well as Colorado chef Keith Jones, a.k.a the Champagne Chef; and children's activities, including a carnival, midway and petting zoo. Vote for your favorite Texas wines at the People's Choice Wine Tasting Classic, and don't forget to pick up your souvenir wine glass, which is included with paid admission to the consumer-judged wine competition. Take advantage of special packages aboard the GrapeFest Express, a festive makeover of the Grapevine Vintage Railroad. And at GrapeStomp, attendees ages 13 and older can compete in teams of two to see who can stomp out the most grape juice. This year's festival makes room for beer, too. A children's tent will host performances by Eddie Coker, the Side Street Circus and other entertainers. The local version features a glittering gallery of area chefs, such as Anthony Bombaci, Kent Rathbun and Brian Olenjack, headlining a five-course dinner paired with wine at the Hilton Anatole. James Beard Foundation award winner Patrick O'Connell (of the Inn at Little Washington, in Washington, Va.) will be special guest at the dinner, which will benefit the foundation and Dallas Farmers Market Friends. WE WILL NEVER FORGET 9/11
September 11th, 2007, will mark the 6th anniversary of the World Trade Center attacks. Cities all over the country are commemorating this day by giving tribute to the many that lost their lives on this fateful day. Here are some events that will be happening in the Dallas, San Antonio and Austin areas of Texas for September 11th, 2007:
Austin- Truth Now TRUTH ACTION and Memorial Event
The Austin 9/11 Truth Now TRUTH ACTION and Memorial event at the Texas State Capitol on the morning of September 11, beginning at 8:30 is a great way to commemorate this day in the Austin area. They will hold a memorial vigil for the victims of the attacks and also will set up a table with signs, informational handouts, photographs and DVD's for the students, faculty and staff. The plan is to remain as silent as possible for the duration of the time that the attacks in New York took place. You can find more information on the Truth Now website.
McKinney - 9/11 Memorial
If you live in or will be in the McKinney area on September 11th, you can stop by the McKinney 9/11 Memorial. This event will begin at 9a.m. at the McKinney Public Safety Building which is found on Taylor-Burk Drive. McKinney Police Chief Doug Kowalski, McKinney Fire Chief Mark Wallace and Mayor Pro Tem Thad Helsley will give speeches at the memorial ceremony. There will also be bagpipers and a 21-gun salute.
San Antonio - 9/11 Keeping Faith, Keeping Freedom Commemoration
If you will be further south in San Antonio, this big city also has plans for several memorial events on 9/11. Part of the commemoration on this special day will include the reading of the names of the 9/11 victims in individual religious organizations and schools throughout the city. In addition, to honor the 2,996 lives that was lost on this fateful day 6 years ago, the city of San Antonio is going to hold it's first annual "9/11 Keeping Faith, Keeping Freedom" interfaith/ecumenical services. Religious and civic leaders of many walks of life and varying faiths of San Antonio will host this event. Leading the event are San Antonio Mayor Phil Hardberger and Rabbi Aryeh Scheinberg from Congregation Rodfei Sholom. Prayer services are also being held in the week leading up to September 11th at churches, mosques, schools and synagogues across the city. To be sure that each name is read individually and given the person attention that such a tragedy deserves, each institution holding a ceremony will be given the names of 30 victims of 9/11 to read aloud. Across the city of San Antonio, all the names will be read.
Taylor, Texas - 9/11 Parade and Program
Taylor, Texas will hold a 9/11 Parade and Program beginning at 10:00 am at Heritage Square in downtown Taylor. This event is sponsored by Taylor Firefighters Association. Contact Matthew Whisenant for more information.
Tyler -- Safer, More Compassionate World Forum
The city of Tyler will also hold a September 11th ceremony. Our Voices Together with the League of Women Voters of Tyler/Smith County will host a Safer, More Compassionate World Forum at the University Center of the University of Texas at Tyler. At this event a special panel will converge and discuss how citizens can respond to terrorism with positive actions. This panel will include Becky Ramon, nondenominational minister from the Dallas Peace Center; Hannah Walker, Director of Family Services, Habitat for Humanity; and will be moderated by Dr. Robert Sterken. Austin- Truth Now TRUTH ACTION and Memorial Event
The Austin 9/11 Truth Now TRUTH ACTION and Memorial event at the Texas State Capitol on the morning of September 11, beginning at 8:30 is a great way to commemorate this day in the Austin area. They will hold a memorial vigil for the victims of the attacks and also will set up a table with signs, informational handouts, photographs and DVD's for the students, faculty and staff. The plan is to remain as silent as possible for the duration of the time that the attacks in New York took place. You can find more information on the Truth Now website.
McKinney - 9/11 Memorial
If you live in or will be in the McKinney area on September 11th, you can stop by the McKinney 9/11 Memorial. This event will begin at 9a.m. at the McKinney Public Safety Building which is found on Taylor-Burk Drive. McKinney Police Chief Doug Kowalski, McKinney Fire Chief Mark Wallace and Mayor Pro Tem Thad Helsley will give speeches at the memorial ceremony. There will also be bagpipers and a 21-gun salute.
San Antonio - 9/11 Keeping Faith, Keeping Freedom Commemoration
If you will be further south in San Antonio, this big city also has plans for several memorial events on 9/11. Part of the commemoration on this special day will include the reading of the names of the 9/11 victims in individual religious organizations and schools throughout the city. In addition, to honor the 2,996 lives that was lost on this fateful day 6 years ago, the city of San Antonio is going to hold it's first annual "9/11 Keeping Faith, Keeping Freedom" interfaith/ecumenical services. Religious and civic leaders of many walks of life and varying faiths of San Antonio will host this event. Leading the event are San Antonio Mayor Phil Hardberger and Rabbi Aryeh Scheinberg from Congregation Rodfei Sholom. Prayer services are also being held in the week leading up to September 11th at churches, mosques, schools and synagogues across the city. To be sure that each name is read individually and given the person attention that such a tragedy deserves, each institution holding a ceremony will be given the names of 30 victims of 9/11 to read aloud. Across the city of San Antonio, all the names will be read.
Taylor, Texas - 9/11 Parade and Program
Taylor, Texas will hold a 9/11 Parade and Program beginning at 10:00 am at Heritage Square in downtown Taylor. This event is sponsored by Taylor Firefighters Association. Contact Matthew Whisenant for more information.
Tyler -- Safer, More Compassionate World Forum
The city of Tyler will also hold a September 11th ceremony. Our Voices Together with the League of Women Voters of Tyler/Smith County will host a Safer, More Compassionate World Forum at the University Center of the University of Texas at Tyler. At this event a special panel will converge and discuss how citizens can respond to terrorism with positive actions. This panel will include Becky Ramon, nondenominational minister from the Dallas Peace Center; Hannah Walker, Director of Family Services, Habitat for Humanity; and will be moderated by Dr. Robert Sterken. ArtLoveMagic joins forces with the 2007 Urban Arts FestivalSo our biggest and boldest event yet kicks off the festival on Friday 9/7/07 at 8pm. Join artlovemagic as we present dozens of the area's artists, photographers, poets, and musicians. All of the artists will be creating art love for you to witness and participate in. The door admission is only $7

Live Stage
The performance stage never stops. We rotate music and poetry throughout the evening, with our host Will Richey, one of Dallas' finest poets. Our house band, Elder Statesmen is a brilliant, organic ensemble that improvs the night away with multiple guest musicians and spoken word poets joining the jam.
Live Art
In addition to the art being created all over the floor, we also feature special live performances of artists throughout the evening. Painter Rikki Johnson will be working with the band to create live blends of color and music.
Ceramics, Jewelry, Paintings and more
More than 20 local artists, photographers, and crafters will be set up displaying and selling their work. If you'd like a new piece of art for your home or workplace, this is a great place to get it.
